Hal’s Bar & Grill
Hal’s Bar & Grill has been an icon of Venice culture and art for over three decades. Curating an eclectic collection of local artists to adorn the walls is as important to this institution as its California cuisine. When moving to a new home, it was critically important to BDG to ensure that the dedication to art was front and center in the restaurant’s new design. This was achieved in part through the custom design of a combined chandelier/wine rack above the back bar. Using parametric design technology, and a hands-on fabrication process, this steel light fixture, which curves in two directions, is part function and part art.
BDG also designed and hand-laid a custom parquet floor of wood tiles and concrete fill to create warmth, texture, and movement in the large dining and bar areas. The bar top is a custom concrete counter with copper inlay, playing off the copper detail around the booths which were designed to honor the original restaurant in Venice.
